ABOUT ME

Hello! I’m an experienced accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist registered with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). I have worked for 25 years in the NHS within adult mental health including 9 years as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in a psychotherapy team.

I work with people who encounter psychological distress through challenges they have faced in life. I help them to make sense of their situation and make changes to move forward. I am motivated to help people and I offer a safe, supportive environment in which to listen and explore issues in a confidential manner. I am warm, compassionate, caring and sensitive to others which I believe are the most important qualities when working with people.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a psychological approach based on scientific principles which research has shown to be effective for a wide range of problems. It is evidenced based, with hundreds of clinical trials and is included in the NICE guidelines (National Institute of Clinical Excellence).

The Client and therapist work together to identify and understand problems in terms of thoughts, feelings and behaviour and how they impact on the person.
The approach relies on the client and therapist developing a shared view of the problems brought to therapy. This then leads to the identification of personalised, time limited therapy goals and planning of effective proven strategies to overcome the issues.

THE FOCUS

The focus of therapy is to enable the client and therapist to generate solutions to the client’s problems that are more helpful than their present ways of coping. This often involves the client using the time between sessions to try out strategies considered in therapy.

THE TIME

Therapy involves weekly 1 hour sessions face to face at my clinic  or online video sessions. In the first two sessions a plan will be jointly agreed so that effective strategies can be tailored to help the client with the root cause of their problems.

Note: Due to the current Covid pandemic, sessions in my clinic will follow Government protocols and adherence to codes of practice described by the accrediting body for which I am a member.

THE ON-GOING PLAN

Therapy can last up to 20 sessions although this could increase or decrease depending on the nature of the problem and the length of time it has affected the person. This would be reviewed regularly by client and therapist.

Attending therapy has allowed me to take time and have space to reflect and I have learn’t to understand and accept how my past thinking patterns and behaviours were not always the best and how some of my thought processes have led me to my point now. I hope that I am learning better ways to deal with life’s traumas. It has given me greater confidence to be assertive about how I feel rather than brush my feelings aside because they don’t matter. Sometimes I don’t even know what issues I am working on, but I never feel like Paul has missed the point or doesn’t understand. My therapist is different to friends or family in that they never dismiss my thought or feeling. When I started I cried daily and did not know why. I cry sometimes but I know why and allow myself and even say “well done for being compassionate”. My family were anxious and upset. They say it is good to have me back. I felt angry and a bit bitter. I am now starting to make peace with my past, it feels a lot better.

Attending Paul’s weekly sessions for anxiety has helped me immensely. Having suffered from anxiety for four years the therapy that I received has helped me to cope and recognise the conditions. Paul Is a good listener and understands what problems I have had and the therapy he gives me has taken me to levels of total calm. Paul has understood completely what I have been experiencing and over the sessions has given me therapy on a step by step basis that has progressively helped me to control and deal with my problem.

I was able to discuss my problems and issues with an independent person. Paul understood the issues and gave me a greater sense of mindfulness and happiness. I am a different person to the one who walked into my first session. Paul has been fantastic and really helped me through a difficult period in my life. I now feel a lot happier, more in control and generally in much better health physically and mentally. I cannot recommend Paul highly enough, I felt I was able to discuss anything without being judged. He gave excellent guidance and feedback taking me on a great journey, I am now able to understand myself better and put things into perspective.

There was very little if anything at all what he didn’t understand. Even if there were specific situations or obsessive things I did that he wasn’t aware of , he could still provide useful information and techniques to combat them. I felt that what I was experiencing was easily explained, and that it was not something unique to me. The strategies that I have learned are always useful and have allowed me to free up a lot of time that would previously have been taken up. It allows you to help yourself. What you learn in CBT can be used for the rest of your life. In the case of CBT you do not necessarily need to detail every obsessive action you do, which allows progress to be made quickly.

Booking my son in for therapy with Paul is probably one of my best decisions. Not only did it help him deal with the habits I was aware of, it brought to light other issues that were restricting his life and stopping him being a happy teenager. Being able to regularly talk to someone who clearly understood every aspect of his OCD has been really been, for him, life changing. My son found Paul incredibly easy to talk to and came home from each session with a positive, confident attitude, putting him a good position to follow the advice and strategies he’d been given. If I’m honest, not knowing how it would all work, I was initially concerned about the financial commitment of seeing it through, but now I can honestly say it is the best money I have spent. Paul is clearly passionate about his job and, from the results I have seen, incredibly effective. I cannot recommend him enough!

The therapy has helped me massively so far when I first started. I was so nervous and anxious but can’t believe how much I have overcome my anxiety. I now deal with it instead of having panic attacks and worrying all the time. I’m much more chilled and enjoy life. Paul really understands my issue and has helped me understand and learning how to deal with it. It has grown confidence for me. I am really happy to have found Paul as I have tried therapy a couple of times and felt it never worked or I couldn’t open up but it was nice to feel comfortable to open up and talk about my problems.

Therapy has allowed me to acknowledge, accept and appreciate my anxiety as well as helped me to cope with it. It has enabled me to see my worth and make me believe in myself and my abilities. It has given me confidence and pushed me outside of my comfort zone which has made my life so different all for the better. It has given me knowledge of how my brain thinks which affects how I now deal with situations. Paul understands completely my issues and always helps me to resolve and think about situations however big or small. Always makes me feel that my views, emotions and opinions are validated. I am extremely happy that I made contact with Paul and believe that since therapy all aspects of my life have changed completely for the better. I am the most content and happy I have ever been in life and believe that is completely down to the progress I have made in therapy. I am so grateful for the help and support I have had and don’t know how to thank you enough for giving me a new perspective and outlook on a life that before meeting you, I had decided wasn’t worth living. What a turn around!

It has helped me feel more in control.Paul has worked in the NHS for so many years he has been able to understand my issues also my family dynamics and health issues. This helped because it was more like talking with a friend and that helped me open up.We have taken our time and tackled one issue at a time and really focus on the next steps. My anxiety levels have reduced drastically and I feel more able to deal with what life throws at you. I have had my slips but Paul has helped me to get back up and carry on.

It is very useful for me to be able to get thoughts off my chest. and for someone to listen and help with my understanding of issues relevant to my current situation. He has helped me a lot to get to a place where I feel a lot free’er and able to get the moments of insecurity and intrusive thoughts. I would say Paul has a great understanding of OCD which I struggle with.

Attending therapy has helped me regulate and understand my emotions and consequent behaviour to a greater extent that I previously did. Paul has helped me create action plans going forward to help me deal with situations that I previously struggled with. Since attending therapy, I have felt a lot less anxious with regards to certain situations and a greater sense of calmness in my life. I would recommend Paul to anyone who wants some help in any specific or general part of their life due to understanding nature and commitment to helping people become the best version of themselves.

Paul is a good listener and understood what we needed to talk about, even, if on occasions I didn’t. I had a couple of goals relating to improving my ability to have happy relationships, and talking to Paul, who understood me felt easy and natural. If relaxed and unthreatening is what you are looking for, then Paul will be perfect for you. Unthreatening does not mean unchallenging, because my therapy was hard work at times, but definitely worth it.
